Headphones in, world out. For many students, music is more than just background noise; it’s a way to process emotions, stay motivated, and connect to personal experiences.
For junior Phoenyx Johnson, “Try Again” by Aaliyah is more than just a favorite; it’s a mindset.
“I like it because it reminds me that it’s okay if you fall down or mess up as long as you get up and try again,” Johnson said.
Yet Senior Stanley Hopgood connects music in a different way, finding meaning in lyrics that reflect his current experiences.
His favorite song, “She Drives Me Wild” by Michael Jackson, stands out because of how relatable it feels.
“The chorus is relatable to what’s going on in real life for me,” Hopgood said. “And the whole song is just great.”
While some students turn to music for reflection or comfort, others use it as a source of confidence.
Senior Kelvin Jones finds that feeling in “I’m the Best” by Nicki Minaj.
“It implies so much,” Jones said. ‘I’m on top of everybody that has done me wrong. The feeling of you can’t say anything to me because I’m on top.”
On the other hand, Senior Dounbari Delolo connects to music through sound and atmosphere.
Her favorite song, “Root of All Evil” by Daniel Ceasar, stands out for its relaxing feeling. Not just for the lyrics, but how it feels in the moment.
“I’ve been listening to my summer playlist, and it gives summer vibes,” Delolo said. “Plus, the guitar is nice.”
I even find a personal connection with music. It helps with getting my work done and even gets me through stressful times.
“In the Closet” by Michael Jackson is my favorite song. It stands out because of its strong emotion and unique sound. The beat and vocals create a powerful vibe, and it shows how music can express feelings in a way words sometimes can’t. It’s a song that always grabs my attention and keeps me engaged.
Although each student connects to music differently, their choices highlight how powerful songs can be. Whether it’s motivation, confidence, reliability, or simply a feeling, music becomes a reflection of who they are and what they’re going through.
In the end, a favorite song is never just a song. It’s a memory, a mindset or a moment. Something personal that stays with them long after the music fades.
