Even though this program is a well-known staple of our school, Tiger Tutoring remains one of the most useful yet most overlooked resources available to students every day after school
The best part? There are no complicated sign-ups required. All students have to do is walk into the library after school whenever they feel they’ll need a little extra support.
“There will be several teachers there, usually core teachers. There will be a math, English, science, and history teacher,” Mr. Murphy explained, “making sure that all core subjects are covered in tutoring so that teachers can answer any questions asked.”
That direct access to teachers is what turns struggling students into top performers.
“I’ve had two students in particular who, last semester and the beginning of this semester, started coming on a regular basis,” Mrs. Hill mentioned. “It definitely changed their overall grade. Just the work ethic and time they’ve put into it changed their grades tremendously.”
The help isn’t missing, it’s just waiting for students to show up.
“Tiger Tutoring helps me mostly with missing work,” student Jockeece Mann stated. “For any math homework or world history assignments I needed extra time on, my teacher recommended Tiger Tutoring.”
By spending forty-five minutes with a core teacher right after school, students are finding that by utilizing the hour immediately following the final bell, students can complete difficult assignments.
“The difference is knowing for sure that you’re doing the work right,” Makia Walton mentioned. “When I’m at home, sometimes I’m just guessing, but having a teacher right there means I don’t have to worry about turning in something that’s completely wrong.”
The atmosphere in the library during tiger tutoring is notably different from the standard classroom. Instead of a lecture setting, the space is filled with small groups together and one on one sessions.
This setup allows students to ask questions they might feel too intimidated to ask in front of a full class of 20 peers.
“It’s a different kind of energy. I walked in confused, but I left feeling like I actually accomplished something instead of just wasting my afternoon struggling alone.” Makia expressed.
Tiger Tutoring, the only thing standing between a student and a better grade is the decision to show up.
