School spirit is supposed to bring students together and make school a place where everyone feels proud and involved. While some students believe our school has strong school spirit, I think we actually lack school spirit, especially when it comes to participation and support.
Before I came to high school I thought we would have a lot of school spirit, at least more than the middle school but when we had our first spirit week I was disappointed. It was definitely not as high as my expectations. The only people in the building that dressed up were the seniors. The freshmen were lacking and the sophomores didn’t even participate!
I also thought that the student section would be packed for games but when you look at the volleyball games or softball the student sections are empty.
Kristian Taylor believes that our school does show spirit.
“Yes, I do think that our school has school spirit because we are able to embrace each other and each day as ourselves at school,” Taylor said. “Spirit week, dressing in themes, and earning roar coins are ways students show pride in the school,”
Even though these activities exist, not everyone participates. To me, school spirit is more than just events—it’s about showing up and supporting each other regularly.
“School spirit means to take pride and belong to education as a whole collective,” Taylor said.
This is something I think our school still needs to work on.
Other students agree that school spirit is uneven. Freshman Melodie Pennycook pointed out that older students tend to show more spirit.
“I think a lot of people at our school have good school spirit, especially the older students,” Pennycook said.
School spirit is just not consistent across all grade levels. Pennycook admitted that freshmen have struggled this year. “We were in last place for just about everything.”
There are also ideas on how school spirit could improve.
Taylor suggested better rewards, like earning bigger prizes for roar coins, which could motivate students to get more involved.
Pennycook suggested scheduling games better so more teams and students can attend and support each other.
Overall, while some students believe our school has strong school spirit, I think we still lack school spirit because many students do not participate or show support. With better incentives, better planning, and more encouragement, our school could build a stronger school spirit in the future.

I LOVE this article! (From Yearbook) As a senior, our class has always had the most school spirit since freshman year, we just always understood each other and that’s what I love about this article. It shows the perspectives of other classes who aren’t seniors.
