You’re in your third block class of your school day, you haven’t eaten anything, and you’ve just been sitting there for the whole hour and 23 minutes watching the time slowly go by while slowly losing focus and energy, waiting for your lunch period. In that class you’re hungry and gaining more hunger as every minute goes by, just imagine going through that every day or every other day for your entire school year.
At HHS the school day starts at 7:40am and the second lunch starts at 12:46pm, there’s a span of 5 hours in between those times. So therefore there’s students going five hours without food in their system.
“It takes too long in the day for it to get to my lunch,” Sophomore Mia Double said. “ At this point it’s not even lunch, it’s just starvation.”
The second lunch is right before the last block at HHS so by time it gets up to the students time to eat they’re too drained to.
“Honestly I hate having second lunch,” Freshman Le’Asia Johnson said. “It’s like right before my last hour, and I have to go throughout the whole day without eating. It makes me not even want to eat anymore.”
The high school and middle school sharing a cafeteria is the main cause of this problem. Middle school students who have first lunch are eating at 10:30am which isn’t even a lunch, it’s a breakfast, so while our second lunch is too late their first lunch is way too early. But unfortunately there’s no way to fix that problem of sharing a cafeteria.
But for students who just can’t wait that long into the school day to eat like me, we could start to bring snacks for home or make something small at home to eat.
Our school also offers a snack store so if you have a spare dollar or one of your friends or family members could let you have a dollar or two you could go there and get something to snack on, or if you get a roar coin you could go to the office and get a snack to tie you very till your lunch period.
