On March 30th, 2023, HHS’s National Honor Society (NHS) inducted 18 new members from the Sophomore and Junior classes. The students inducted show the four pillars of NHS: service, character, scholarship, and citizenship.

The inductees from the sophomore class are: Zainab Al-Saadi, Vin Alissa, Isac Denoyer, Lana Ejneid, Brenna Gaines, Miranda Guss, Eldijana Klokic, Alexis Misselhorn, Cameron Oliver, Anesa Ratkusic, Faith Unger, Haider Waheed, and Alyssa Wilson.

The inductees from the junior class are: Korie Michaelis, Paul Pierce, James Rottnek, Curtis Schnieders, and Zilynn Watt.

The induction ceremony was held in the library, inductees were surrounded by their parents and guardians. Mr. Williams and Dr. McInnis gave welcoming remarks and then the induction began. President Lela Zeilman, Vice President Anna Tisdale, Parliamentarian Kiara Morris, and Secretary Madison Puckett lit candles and read paragraphs about each of the four pillars of NHS, and Treasurer DeAnna Haynes emcee’d the event.

“I am looking forward to volunteering more and helping out the community,” Junior Korie Michaelis said.

One might be wondering, how do you join NHS. According to Advisor Brooke Barfield it’s an easy 6-step process.

Step One: GPA over 3.0 and Attendance over 90%- All qualified students are given an application form to complete including a paragraph about why they believe they would be a good addition to the group.

Step Two: Barfield sends out to the teachers the students’ names and paragraphs for recommendations/voting. They will make recommendations based on their interactions with the students for the four pillars of- service, scholarship, leadership, and character.

Step Three: Barfield checks discipline referrals and makes sure students meet the character requirements with principals.

Step Four: The candidates go up for nomination with the faculty council and they vote (Barfield does not get a vote as the advisor).

Step Five: Principal Approval of all selected members.

Step Six: Barfield sends out invitations and holds induction.
