HHS has started to use artificial intelligence in their day to day school lives to help students get more education and give them a little something extra other than a teachers opinion. HHS teachers have been using AI to help them create things for their students in class.
AI isn’t something that many schools use for learning purposes but HHS is a school that leads by example, and they are successfully showing everyone that kids can learn from AI and pass with using it.
“We are an early adopter of AI, we are one of the first schools anywhere around even in Missouri,” Principal David Williams said. “We got national recognition for having an AI summit over the summer, and it was like a three day conference where teachers would come from all schools around to learn about AI.”
Even though AI has benefits there are still some concerns and worries about using AI in classrooms.
“I’m worried that a lot of students are using it just to put answers down on paper and there not using it to actually learn the content it is teaching them,” Social Studies teacher Chad Hastings said. “So I think it can be helpful for some students, but I don’t think all students are using it in an appropriate way.”
Just because students have used AI for things they shouldn’t have in the past doesn’t mean we should cut off a resource that helps.
“I think that it’s just an inevitable part of our future,” Hastings said. “I think it’s gonna be a part of most jobs and careers in the future, and I mean I myself use it and I think will continue to use it because it is really helpful. AI just has access to so much information and can create really great things with a lot of ease.”
Freshman Jeremiah Woods is one of the many students who find AI helpful in his classes.
“Say we are writing something for a grade and I submit it and I get a one,” Woods said. “It tells me what I did right and what I did wrong so I know what I need to change and what I should keep the same to improve my grade.”
Although teachers are very good at helping students with work and teaching you things, AI can also help students with their work too.
“They both help a lot but AI just gives that extra detail that helps a little more than a teacher,” Sophomore Mia Garrett said, “A teacher is going to give you information but wants you to find the rest by yourself, but AI gives you everything.”
While students do use AI now in school to help them, teachers also use AI to help them with things for personal needs or to create things for their students.
“It has made the things that I want to do more achievable, I’m able to do more because it’s such a time saver,” Science teacher Vera Weis said, “I wouldn’t say it changes the quality of the things I do though it just more so helps expedite those things.”
