Most students spend their afternoons on their phones, but HHS Emilly Montgomery (10) spends hers baking cookies and running her own small business.
“I’ve always had a huge passion for baking and cooking,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery just started a cookie business on April 24, 2025. What began as a small idea has grown into a successful business.
“I find it interesting how you can come up with so many different recipes and figure out if they’re good or not,” she said. “It’s kind of like a total experiment in my eyes.”
Montgomery started her cookie business by promoting it through her friends. Then, she made flyers with her contact information.
“I originally told all of my friends about it, and then I made a flyer talking about the items that I’d be selling,” she said. “I included my contact info and a link to my new baking account on Insta.”
So far, her most popular cookies are Nutella and chocolate chip cookies. “Out of the couple of flavors that I’ve made so far, my original Nutella-stuffed chocolate chip cookie sells the most, more than anything,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery says one of the best parts about running the business is getting to know her customers’ taste in cookies.
“The most fun thing about my business is getting to meet people’s interests and getting to know them by what cookies they prefer,” she said. “Some people are chocolate lovers, others are more fruit lovers, and some are more towards sugar cookie flavors.”
But running a small business at 15 isn’t easy. Montgomery says that keeping up with orders while trying to handle her own life is hard.
“I’d say that the most difficult thing would be dealing with people’s thoughts on things, and making them happy,” she said. “I do also have my own life, so trying to fulfill their needs for their orders can be a little tricky.”
Atziry Rivas (10) tried Emily’s cookies and loved them.
“I bought an Oreo confetti cookie, and it was so yummy that I ended up buying it two more times,” she said. “It was soft and sweet with the perfect crunch, and I would definitely buy it again.”
Another student, Danika Chapman (10), also had one of Emily’s cookies and was surprised by how good it was. “My favorite cookie was the confetti one with icing,” she said.
“It actually tasted really good. I don’t even like confetti stuff, but I’d eat it again for sure.
Even though she just started her business, she’s already made $160, and plans to continue baking over the summer and into the next school year.
“My first day, I only sold 8 cookies, $2 each, and I made $18,” Montgomery said. “But overall, I’ve made around $160 in total throughout the couple of days that I’ve done it, so I feel it’s going great so far.”
