March 3 marked the start of spring sports, and Boys’ Baseball hopes to have an electric season and outclass every opponent. The team is led by head coach Jose Ochoa and assistant coach Kalik May.
“We feel good, we’re very young, but with an excellent mindset, and looking to get better every day,” coach May. There is some exceptional talent on this team that can make it far into the districts, possibly seeing state; junior
Juniors Travis Moorehead and Santiago Storey are young stars on the team, and they’re leaders. Senior Donald Bonzano is one of their best seniors, playing right field. Unfortunately, this will be his last season with the baseball team, making it his most challenging year to beat any opponent. We have high intentions for this team. Coach Ochoa is looking for a highly competitive season.
“We are young this season, we won 10-11 games, we are seeking the same thing, as may be higher, and work towards our short term goals,” said Ochoa.
The players feel confident this year, trying to make themselves known and show how it’s done; Moorehead plays second base, and his goals are very high this year as he wants to upset every team they play.
“Being the underdog is very motivating thing to create upsets against big teams, and it makes me and my team want to win even more,” said Moorehead.
Moorehead has set big goals for this season. “I want to have at least a .250 batting average and at least 15 swiped bags.” Storey plays shortstop, and he’s looking forward to this season being a big competition. He set the tone as a young star.
“This season, I hope to make an impact on our young core and hopefully get far in districts. For my personal goals, though, I would like to add on and get my 3rd 1st team all conference,” said Storey.
As the team gets together to make a bond and learn from each other and become a team, that’s when teamwork begins. However, they are working on techniques and skills to improve as a team at the Heine Meine baseball field.
The team’s goal is to win games and also have fun at the same time, Sophomore Jayden Diggs wants to enjoy all the memories with them, especially the seniors. Unfortunately, he suffered from an ACL injury last football season.
So he will be there for support and to watch. He may be cleared in the middle of the season; possibly, he will be on watch till further notice.
“I would like to start to be a leader because, as a baseball team right now, we don’t have a leader because it’s a lot of young people on this team and they don’t take the drills serious,” said Diggs.
Therefore, this team will go out on April 1st and face the Mehlville Panthers to get a new start to this young team’s season and hopefully demotivate the opposing teams by outscoring and outworking them.
