Once that paycheck hits, I immediately look at what I want to buy. I assume that’s how the rest of us are.
However, I hope this article will help you do the opposite of that. I went around the school and discussed this topic with various people, and what stuck out the most to me was the fact that you need discipline to save. However, with discipline, you also need tactics to help with that discipline.
Jordan Harvey (11) believes just because you have money to spend doesn’t mean you need to spend it. “One tactic is recognizing what is a need vs. want.”
With discipline, you need a plan to help create a budget. A budget helps with your spending and keeps track of everything. Creating a budget can lead you to understand what money can go to what you want and need.
You might ask, “Why do I need to save right now? I’m only in high school.”
Saving money can help you, no matter if you’re saving for the latest iPhone or a new car. Teens should save money because learning how to save is an extremely important skill to have, no matter your age. It helps you understand future financial decisions.
Make a fun budget can also help you save money. What I do is let myself splurge on each paycheck, then save the rest I don’t spend. However, teens usually get jobs to spend money on shopping, eating, or just going out. So, there should be an advantage for them, such as being able to spend some of their checks while still saving money.
At the end of the day, although there are facts on saving money, all you need is to believe in yourself. If you have trust in yourself to save money, then you can do so.
