Eight years after its launch, Fortnite is still the most played and top-ranked game, proving it’s more than a trend.
Fortnite was officially released on July 25, 2017, and nearly a decade later, it remains the most-played video game. Fortnite stays on top by constantly evolving, with large live events, regular updates, and popular franchise crossovers like Star Wars, Lego, etc. These are important and what keep players addicted to the game. While other games fade, Fortnite keeps evolving and growing.
One of the biggest reasons Fortnite has remained so popular is its ability to constantly reinvent itself. From the new seasons, Epic Games always finds a way to keep things exciting. Longtime players still find themselves returning, drawn by the changing experience.
Precious Silver (10) is a Fortnite player who loves the game.
“I’ve been playing Fortnite for so long, I’ve lost track of how many years I’ve been playing,” said Silver. “But what keeps me coming back is how different the game feels every time I log in. It never gets boring with all the new updates and crossovers.”
A unique update that Fortnite added was the Zero Build update which removed the building, focusing on action, with players getting a recharging Overshield for extra defense.
“I love the Zero Build because I’m not great at building,” Silver said. “It’s way more about the action, and I can focus on fighting without worrying about building walls every two seconds. And, the Overshield adds a cool layer of defense.”
Another major part of Fortnite’s success is its social aspect. Unlike many other games, Fortnite isn’t just about winning it’s about creating experiences with friends. The game offers a variety of modes, from classic Battle Royale to Creative, where players can design and play custom maps.
“Fortnite isn’t just a game, it’s a way to hang out with my friends,” Silver said. “Me and my friends go to a Party just to mess around for fun. Even when we’re not playing Battle Royale, there’s always something to do. It’s more than just shooting and building.”
Kelvin Jones (11) is another Fortnite player who has been playing for four years. Like Silver, he believes Fortnite’s ability to change constantly is what makes it enjoyable.
“I think the constant new game modes and new skins keep the game alive and make it unique compared to other games,” Jones said.
For him, one of the best moments in Fortnite was the Marvel season.
“My favorite season was the Marvel season because I love anything and everything Marvel-related,” he said. “The season brought iconic superheroes, special abilities, and battles, making it really addicting.”
One of the biggest reasons players keep returning to Fortnite is the excitement of collecting and switching up skins. Customizing characters adds a personal touch to the game and keeps things from getting boring.
Sariah Hunter (10) agrees with this, “One of the best parts is changing my skins every now and then and buying V-Bucks to get new ones,” Hunter added.
Seasonal events make the game even more exciting, especially during Halloween when Fortnite drops some of its best and creepiest designs.
“My favorite season is definitely around Halloween because the spooky skins are always my favorite!” Hunter said.
Fortnite stays popular because it keeps changing with new updates, game modes, and crossovers. Whether it’s Zero Build, seasonal events, or playing with friends, there’s always something exciting to do. Fortnite will continue to be a top favorite for players.
