Wyatt Baker is a Freshman at HHS and is already getting the spotlight as a wrestler for the Tigers.
The sport of wrestling has had a positive impact on Wyatt’s life.
“Wrestling has affected me in both negative and positive ways mentally, losing all the weight I did, and growing muscle had a positive impact on me,” said Baker. “But, there have been times where losing matches has had a toll on me, but luckily my coaches helped me snap out of it and get ready to give the next match my all.”
Wyatt understands that nervousness could destroy his mindset and that it’s natural and can get past it.
“When the season started I used to feel very nervous and scared before a match but as the season has gone on and I’ve improved I now get myself in the right state of confidence I need to win,” said Baker. “To be honest I didn’t have a way to handle being nervous, and it feels like it made me underperform.”
Head Coach Ryan Keith has a positive opinion of him.
“He works hard in the practice room and pushes himself to do his best,” Keith said. “He is still growing as a wrestler but I like the progress he is making.”
Teammate Tyler Hayes (9) believes that he can, and is doing better for both his performance and his motivation.
“He has improved a lot over this season, I think that his motivation increased too,” Hayes said. “He always works hard to achieve his goal and to be the right weight and strength before a match.”
Wyatt placed 5th in a recent match, and it had a positive toll on his mentality.
“I felt defeated placing 5th in the tournament, there have been multiple tournaments where I’ve placed 5th place, where I feel if I had did one thing differently I could have won a medal at 3rd, 2nd, or 1st.”
Coach Keith has a promising outlook for Wyatt’s future wrestling career.
“He is in a tough weight class so I am not sure what this season will hold for him,” Coach Keith said. “But I look forward to seeing his growth in the off-season and what he will be able to do next year.”
Outside of school and wrestling, Baker is just like anyone else.
“While I don’t play a lot of sports I like playing them and learning them,” Baker said. “I play video games a lot, hang out with my girlfriend, and mess around with my friends.”
