Mrs. Sherry Rischbieter is HHS’s new Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) teacher this year.
After spending five years in the classroom, Rischbeiter spent the next 30 as a counselor. She retired in 2022 under the rule of 86.
“I worked 32 years and then my age added up to 86, so that’s the normal time people go out for retirement,” Rischbeiter said. “That’s the longest people usually work.”
Rischbieter has returned to the HPSD staff after being retired for two years because of special one-year permission from the Governor.
“There was a shortage of certain certified areas in school districts, one of them being FACS,” Rischbeiter said.
She wanted to return to Hancock to teach because she enjoyed the school and the kids.
“I loved this school because it was a smaller school and I could get more of a relationship with students,” Rischbieter said.
She hopes that she can spend some of her one year training the person who will take the job next year.
“I’m hoping as I’m building the relationship with the kids to be able to also develop some programs and keep some good records throughout the months so that next person that comes in has an opportunity for great success,” Rischbeiter said. “Ideally, I would love if the new person could start second semester even if it’s just their student teaching that they could start training ahead of time.”
Mrs. Rischbieter got her bachelor’s degree in teaching and master’s degree in counseling at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri.
Rischbeiter has a hobby of cooking and it is therapeutic to her.
“More than anything I love cooking, which is probably pretty obvious because I love teaching the Foods classes here,” she said. “Whenever I get bored or stressed, or whatever, I love to cook and bake, and then I give it to other people.”
Rischbieter has three sons. Her husband, Bob, owns an automotive repair shop. She is a fan of Christmas movies.
“One of my favorite movies is When Harry Met Sally, and I love to watch it, especially around Christmas time,” Rischbeiter said. “I love probably every other Christmas movie out there.”
Rischbieter was inspired to be a teacher because she loved helping out people.
“I loved the thought of helping other kids,” she added.
