Diving in the Library and the Office

Have you ever heard about a library assistant or an office skill student? What do they do? A library assistant is a student that helps Mrs. Krista Dunn, our librarian, in the library. They have to dust, put away books where they go, help set up activities, make and take down bulletin boards, and help rearrange the library.
“I give my students a grade for this class. Most of the kids that do this are kids who already have almost all of their required classes finished. So this wouldn’t be something that is required,” Mrs. Dunn said. “So they’re like the seniors who have a few classes to take, and so they choose to do this instead of repeating an elective class.”
This class is normally for students that have most of their credits but they can also get a credit from this class that would count towards their elective credits. Ranim Husein is a senior library assistant and she has this class 4th hour.
“I enjoy delivering newspapers to the high school and middle school teachers. I also like to walk around the school and not stay in one class,” Husein said.
Chloe Measmer is another library assistant that works with Husein during 4th hour. But there are other students that help Mrs. Dunn in other hours.
“I like that I have the time to work on assignments for other classes that I didn’t have time to do after I get done with what I have to do in the library,” Measmer said.
An office skill student is like the library assistants but they help Mrs. Joyce Sauter, our secretary, in the office. They also help out other teachers by making copies they request and need to teach their classes, deliver packages to teachers, do laminating, sort and label shirts and awards for sports, and put up posters.
“They stock the RHR coin shelf and let people in by pushing the button sometimes when I am busy, and they do almost anything,” Sauter said.
This class is also for seniors who got all of their credits and required classes done. But for this class, you do not earn any credit. Aiden Doering is one of the office skill students and he does this job during 2nd hour. He enjoys helping in the office and he enjoys when he has free time.
“When I don’t have any work to do it is basically a free period to do homework, watch videos, or read,” Doering said. “I also use my free time to make a monthly copy report for all of the copies I print and who requested them. They can be found in the copier room in the office and it’s one of my favorite things I’ve done in that class.”
Kal-El Britton and Ibrahim Fejzic are also office skill students. It helps them know the layout of the school and where teachers are. It also helps them know how to use and fix the printer when it breaks down.
Britton said, “It can be hard, sometimes the printer does something that just doesn’t make any sense, or there are a lot of teachers that have a lot of paper they need to be printed in a very short amount of time, some even wait until the day of their work.”
