The 2018 HHS softball team made history this year by winning the sports first ever district championship. The team was able to shut down district rival Herculaneum through their spectacular defense with a final score of 9-3.

Last season the Tigers lost the district championship to St. Pius X, after only losing one senior, this years team was determined to do better.

Head coach Nicole Herman has coached the softball program for 21 years and played for the tigers throughout her high school career, but has never won a district title.

“We have had teams in the past that had the potential, just never really put it all together at one time to make a run at post season. This year, it is just something special,” said Herman.

With all the nerves and pressure, the Tigers knew that winning the district title wouldn’t be easy. The girls were able to keep the defense tight and take the black cats out with a double play.

“I had a lot of nervous energy throughout the game. It was nice to have a kid doubled off at the end of the game, I just stood back, took a sigh of relief and let the kids celebrate,” Herman said.

Junior third basemen Mariah Gowan also experience a similar rush of feelings after the last play of the game.

Alexis made a great double play and we all ran screaming and jumping to the pitching mound, I cried with joy,” told Gowan.

Ending the season 18-3, the lady tigers had a memorable season that will be hard to follow up and impossible to forget.

“Turning that double play to end the game is something I will always remember, we made history and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I can’t think of a better way to end my highschool season,” Marsala said.
