High school is tough enough, but what if you got dumped into a school where you couldn’t reply to your peers? New HHS students Leonel and Josue Tenorio know that struggle.

They are from Huntington Beach, California, where they studied at Ocean View High School. Their first language is Spanish. They can understand English, but they can not speak it.  (Google Translate was used to conduct interviews with the bothers.)

The brothers moved to St. Louis and started going to HHS. Their first day included a tour with HS counselor Mrs. Steinhauff and sophomore Sharon Gutierrez.

“I was a little scared on the first day. I thought that everyone would see us differently, and that we would not get enough help,” Leonel Tenorio said.

Not being able to speak English can be a major setback. It can cause a lot of confusion in the classroom along with not being able to ask for help.

“It’s difficult to not be able to speak English because I can’t communicate to my peers,” Leonel Tenorio explained.

The brothers received a lot of help from students for translation. They have also embraced Hancock by signing up for the soccer team.

“My first week went really well, a lot of people helped me and made me feel comfortable,” Josue Tenorio said.
